LACROSSE ALL-STAR GAME

SENIOR MOMENT

Seniors compete in first county All-Star lacrosse game

MIDDLETOWN — They’re finished with the books, the classrooms, their high schooling.  There was just one thing left for these county senior lacrosse players to do before preparing for next week’s graduation.  Play one last game together — this time for fun, with no pressure.

The inaugural Frederick County Boys and Girls Senior All-Star Games were held Saturday at Middletown High School. The County girls won a 14-10 decision over the City, and the County boys won, 11-7.

Some of the players haven’t played in as long as three weeks, when the playoffs began. But Urbana’s Maggie Roundy said most of the players Saturday were still in good shape, ready to go. “I don’t think we were too rusty,” said Roundy, who is heading to Salisbury next fall. “It was fun. We also got a chance to play with people we hadn’t played with before.”

In a lot of cases Saturday, opponents became allies, and, in other cases, back to opponents while the game was in progress, Middletown girls coach and co-organizer Dawn Rothenhoefer said. “We had to switch some people around to try and balance things out,” she said.

As with anything new, there were a few quirks during both games. There were some number duplications on some uniforms. Some uniforms had no numbers at all.

But these games weren’t about which players had the same numbers or which players had none. Nor were they about who played for which team. They were about a final show of skill among some of the best senior players in the county.

“As with any first-year event, you review it at the end and see how you can make it better next year,” Rothenhoefer said. “We had a lot of tweaking going on today. The bottom line was this was a day to celebrate the skills of the senior players.”

Roundy said with the continuous mix of players, she got a chance to see a lot of different styles of play. “We also got to see some players and friends we haven’t seen in a while,” she said. Many of the players are involved with club lacrosse in the offseason and play together on those teams, Roundy said.

Some will head for college this fall, where they will continue their lacrosse careers. Others will just head to college. Still others will go right into the workforce.

Walkersville’s Meleah Martin (Navy) said she welcomed the chance  to get one more high school game in before heading to Annapolis in a few weeks. “It’s been great,”she said.

Tuscarora goalie Allison Golightly said she won’t be playing collegiate lacrosse at Elon College this fall, but plans on playing for a club team. “To be a part of this today was exciting,” she said.

For some, it might be the last time a player picks up a lacrosse stick for a long time. Case in point — Middletown’s Tim Tolino.  Tolino said while he enjoys playing lacrosse, his absolute focus at Maryland will be on diving, his forte, next fall. “It might be a while before I play lacrosse again,” he said.

Urbana’s RonJohn Dadd (Bucknell) said it didn’t take long to get adjusted to the play flow, considering there weren’t any specific set pieces on offense or defense in place. “After about the first or second long possession, you were able to figure things out and go from there,” he said.

Welcome to the Knights' Quest Homepage.  The Middletown High School Sports Club, Inc. has embarked on a $3.6 million capital campaign to renovate our high school stadium.  The fundraising for the initiative began in September of 2007.  To date, our campaign has successfully secured pledges and gift-in-kind donations totaling over $1.5 million.

We have not yet reached our goal and there is still work to be done.  If you have not contributed to the campaign, we encourage you to consider making a pledge.  The children and young adults in the Middletown Community will be the direct beneficiary of your gifting.

Work that has been completed to date includes:

New Stadium PA system - September 2007
New FieldTurf synthetic playing surface - July 2008
Repainting of the track - July 2008
New football goal posts - July 2008
Installation of new long jump, triple jump pits - July 2008
Reworked shot put launch/landing - July 2008
Play clocks both ends of field - September 2008
New Video and electronic scoreboard - September 2008

Work still to be completed:

ADA access to site with entranceway
New concessions building
Restrooms meeting current plumbing standards
Replacement of home-side seating with expanded capacity

The project cannot be completed unless we continue to secure the necessary funding.  FCPS is not capable of budgeting any money towards the renovation of the stadium.  Our success depends solely on private funding.  We are hoping for the continued support and involvement of our community.

A total pledge of $1000 over a 5 year period equates to $4.00 per week.  A link is available for additional pledging information.  Please consider helping at the level you are comfortable with and see the difference we can make as a community.

Thank you for visiting our site.
